Most elastic adhesives are based on synthetic rubber in natural rubber, which has high peel strength, but low shear strength, and its own resilience makes it good in fatigue resistance and impact resistance.

Only silicone rubber is resistant to high temperatures, other elastic adhesives are limited to 66-93°C and creep under load at room temperature. These adhesives are commonly supplied as solutions, emulsions, mastics and pressure sensitive tapes.

Solvent-based emulsion adhesives need to evaporate the liquid medium from the adhesive before bonding, which can be done by simple evaporation or forced heating. Some rubber-based adhesives with higher strength or better environmental resistance require high temperature curing.

In addition to pressure-sensitive adhesives, elastic adhesives are used as sealants in the construction industry; neoprene and reclaimed putty are used to bond plasterboard and laminate floors to wood framing. The putty is cured by solvent volatilization from the porous adherend.
